Subhas Chandra Bose was born in Cuttack, in Orissa, on January 23, 1897. His father, Janakinath Bose was a Government Pleader. He was the sixth of the seven sons of his parents.
As a student Subhas Chandra was brilliant, Even when a student his love for India made him restless. le wanted to make India free from foreign rule. He went to England for higher studies. He appeared in the I.C.S. examination and passed with credit. But he was not born to serve under the British masters. He returned to India and joined the freedom movement. He was jailed for many years and suffered much. He was a very popular leader. He became the President of the Indian National Congress twice. But he had differences with other national leaders. So he formed his own- party. the Forward Bloc and fought against the British. The British rulers were afraid of him, so they kept him confined in his own house. One day he slipped out of his house and let India. With the help of Japan and Germany, he organised his famous Azad Hind Fouz, or the Indian National Army, and declared war against the British.
He dreamed of winning India’s freedom. But before he could realize his dream he died in a plane crash in 1945.

Subhash Chandra Bose is well-known to every Indian as one of the greatest freedom fighters of India. He is commonly called “Netaji”.
He was born on 23rd January 1897 in Cuttak, Orissa. The name of his father was Janakinath Bose. His mother’s name was Prabhavati. His father was a lawyer. It was, however, his mother who had a lasting influence on his mind. He was also greatly influenced by some spiritual preachers.
As a young man, his greatest desire was to serve India. He passed his intermediate examination in the first division. He did his B.A. from the Presidency College, Kolkata. He went to England, and more to please his father than himself, he appeared in the Indian Civil Services Examination and passed it getting the fourth position in the merit list.
After returning from England, he joined the Swaraj Party and went to jail for his activities which were undesirable in the eyes of the British.
He joined the Congress and rose to become its President. He did not like the soft glove methods of Gandhiji and there was a perennial disagreement between the two stalwarts.
In order to get freedom for India by force, he led the Indian National Army. He went to Germany and met Hitler to seek his help. Later, he went to Japan. As Japan was defeated, Bose’s whereabouts became a mystery. It is often believed that he died in a plane crash.
He will always be remembered for his great sacrifices and for his famous slogans – “Delhi Chalo” and give me you” blood and I will give you freedom.”

Subhash Chandra Bose was born on January 23rd, 1897 at Cuttack. His father was a lawyer, therefore he had a comfortable childhood. His parents spared no efforts for his education. He in turn always lived up to their expectations by remaining in the top five positions in all the examinations that he took.
While at school Subhash never got along with the other British boys of his class. This childhood antipathy for the British remained with Subhash all through his life. It was therefore not surprising that Subhash had taken the vow to turn the British out of the country at a very early age.
He joined the Indian National Congress, and he was an active participant of all its activities. He, however, did not like the peaceful methods of Gandhiji. In 1938 he was made the President of Congress. It was from this position that he asked the people of India to take up arms. against the British. But he soon resigned from this post after he felt that Gandhiji objected to his approach of gaining freedom.
Such was his popularity amongst the common man that the Government soon arrested him and sent him to jail. He fell ill in the prison and had to go to Europe for treatment. Even there he did not sit idle, instead, he made contacts and friends and tried to influence public opinion, so that India could attain freedom.
On coming back to India he was again arrested and put in jail. He went on a hunger strike. Fearing his death he was put under house arrest. However, he escaped to Berlin and then to Singapore. In Singapore, he formed the Indian National Army(INA). At his clarion call of ‘ Give me Blood and I will give you Freedom’, many people including the women joined the INA. The call of Delhi Chalo’ was on everyone’s lips.
Soon his army attacked British India. But they were outnumbered by the sophistication of the British army. Yet people waited for him and the INA to liberate the country.
Unfortunately, instead of the news of the victory of the INA, the news of his death in a plane crash destroyed all the hopes of an armed liberation of the country from the British.
Netaji was a controversial personality while he lived, and he remained so even in his death. Many people even today believe that he is still living. Yet, whatever may have been his ultimate fate he will always be remembered as a leader who stopped at nothing to win freedom for his country. He was indeed a brave son of the motherland, who gave the slogan of Jai Hind to all the Indians.
