Essay on Value of Trees in English For Students & Children

Trees are of great use in several ways. Life in the absence of trees would, indeed, be hard to imagine. Lush green trees are enchanting, as they provide a pleasant feast to our eyes. And trees shelter many weary passers-by.

Without trees, the rise of civilisation would have been infinitely slower and our present level of development could not have been maintained. Primitive man had no tools such as clubs for hunting, no ploughs for filling the soil, no canoes or boats for travel. Wood fuel made it possible for mankind to live in the cooler regions of the globe and eat cooked food. Trees supplied our forefathers with the means to fulfill their most basic needs.

Trees provided wooden ships for exploration of the world, piling for docks and harbours, wagons for transportation, timbers for bridges, crossties for railroads, propellers and frames for the first airplanes, poles for utilities, etc.

Trees prevent soil erosion and the fertility of the soil is retained. By growing trees on the seashore, the infertile soils of the seashore can be reformed into fertile soil. Trees absorb dust particles in the air and thus prevent air pollution.

The role of forests in regulating rains, cloud-formation, and collecting and preserving underground water sources can hardly be overemphasized. In the hill forests especially, the roots of trees form a vast underground water storage system. Overhead vegetation prevents quick drying of water absorbed by the subsoil during the rainy season. This water trickles out as if rationed by nature, into springs, waterfalls, and rivulets throughout the year.

In toto, trees are man-friendly as they fulfill most of his needs. But the existence of trees is threatened by the man himself. Nature is conquered by man. He exploits his superior power to extract maximum benefits from her. In view of their vast economic benefits, he cuts down trees in very large numbers, overlooking the impending danger.

Even though many Acts and policies have been made by the government regarding the conservation of forests, the individual has still no awareness. So every individual should take this matter into consideration seriously. The Government should enact more strict laws to prevent cutting down of trees and at the same time, offer attractive incentives to the people to grow trees. Scientists should find novel methods to use things that can be used as substitutes for trees in industrial and some other fields.
