Forests are nature’s precious gift to mankind. They existed even before the evolution of man. Early man depended on forests for survival. Forests play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. They provide us with a large number of forest products. Forests are the habitat of a large number of plant and animal species. Agricultural production depends on a stable environment. Forests are vital to the maintenance of a stable environment. They act as a natural defense against floods and soil erosion. Forests meet nearly 40 percent of the energy needs and about 25 percent of the fodder requirements of our country. Forest resources are getting scarcer with deforestation. Steps have been taken to protect the environment. It is the duty of every citizen to plant more and more trees and contribute to forest conservation.

Forests play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. They regulate temperature and attract rains. They stop soil erosion and maintain the fertility of the soil. Forests provide us with a large number of forest products such as timber, fuelwood, medicinal plants, fruits, flowers, barks, etc. Fodder for animals, gum, lac, and rubber are also provided by forests. Furniture, matchstick, toys, etc. are also made from the wood of the forests. Wood is also used in building houses, agricultural tools, and many other things. Forests also provide raw materials for a number of industries.

Forests are the habitat for a large number of plant and animal species. They contribute significantly to the country’s biological diversity. Forests are very important for the sustenance of wildlife. They play an important role in the food chain.

Agricultural production depends on a stable environment. Forests are vital to the maintenance of a stable environment. They also fulfill about 25 percent of the fodder requirements of our country’s vast cattle population. Forest-related activities are a primary source of income for landless rural families. About 33 percent of the tribals earn their livelihood from forests and forest products.

In India, forests occupy about 19 percent of the total geographical area. It is 1.8 percent of the world’s forest cover. In spite of their utilities, forests are being neglected by the people. Forest resources are getting scarcer with the continuous degradation of forests. Extensive deforestation has caused the loss of flora, fauna, and some rare species. It has caused the drying up of drinking water resources and depletion of the ozone layer.

In the name of ‘development,’ deforestation has been taking place. Forests are cleared to accommodates the fast-growing human population. The people of the rural areas migrate to the urban areas in search of jobs. We hardly find enough greenery in the urban areas. Such an environment contributes to pollution, acid rain, etc.

The importance of forests has been realized all over the world now. In recent times, a large number of environment-friendly non-government organizations have come up in order to protect the environment. The government has framed laws for the same. The unauthorized cutting of trees and killing of wild animals is considered illegal and punishable by law.

The National Forests Policy, 1988 recommended that at least 33 percent of the total geographical area should be under forest cover. However, at present, about 19 percent of the total area is covered by forests. Along with the government and other organizations, the people’s involvement is also required to increase the forest cover.
Forests are an indispensable part of the earth’s ecological system. The very existence of the earth will be at stake if the forest cover is not kept intact’. It is the duty of every citizen to plant more and more trees and contribute to forest conservation.
