My Favourite Poet Rabindranath Tagore Essay ( 400 to 500 words )

India is a land of saints, sages, and poets. Rabindranath Tagore combined the qualities of all the three in him. He was a great poet of India, rather of the whole world. The east and the west both pay homage to him.

The great Bengali poet was born on May 6, 1901. He was the youngest son of Maharshi Debendrana Tagore, an eminent leader of the Brahmo Samaj. He did not receive any regular education. For some time, he was taught in a convent school in Calcutta and then privately at home.

He showed a great aptitude for poetry at an early age. He started composing poems when he was a boy. Even at the University College in London where he received higher education, he chose to express his thoughts and feelings mainly through poetry. He wrote and sang songs and directed lyrical dramas. His early poems were published in the form of a collection named “Morning Songs”. He wrote short stories, Love’s, dramas, letters, and essays, but it is as a lyric poet that he is remembered most.

In 1912 he translated in English a collection of his songs known as `Gitanjali’ meaning thereby, a dedication of the poet’s songs to God. The title is quite significant for in it we get a glimpse of his infinite God and his faith in His ways. The whole book is pervaded with the spirit of humanity, thanksgiving, and meek submission to the will of God. It is primarily this book that won him everlasting fame. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913. Being a great patriot, he also composed hundreds of songs that can be sung in martial tunes. He gave us ‘Jana Gana Mana’ the National Anthem. He founded the great Shanti Niketan University at Bolepur in Bengal.

Tagore’s poetry has certain marked characteristics. It is mainly religious. It embodies his views on God and Soul which according to him, are the names of one and the same being. Both are eternal and imperishable. His devotional songs are noble and sublime in their appeal. Another quality of his poetry is that it is always replete with the Indian atmosphere. His poetry breathes the spirit of optimism, gives a message of hope to the twentieth-century man who is torn between the stress and strain of modern life. But what appeals to us most is his humanism.
