One who loves his own country is called a patriot. Everybody loves his own country. He is born there, grows up there, and receives everything from it. In a word, he owes everything to his country of birth. So it is his duty to love this country. This love is called patriotism.
A patriot is prepared to do everything for his country. He can even sacrifice his life and everything he has. His love for the country makes him forget his petty self-interests. The honour and glory of his country are the most precious things to him. If anybody dares insult his country, he considers him his enemy. If his country’s freedom is lost, his only dream is to regain that freedom. We know of many patriots who fought for the freedom of India. Many of them died, many spent years in prison and suffered a great deal. Today we are free only because of their courage and sacrifice. We all remember them with great respect and love. We learn from their life what patriotism is.

Everyone loves his country or Motherland. It is here that we are born and brought up, where our life has blossomed and which has given meaning to our existence. Naturally, we are deeply attached to our Motherland. Patriotism is the love towards one’s Motherland.
Patriotism is one of the noblest feelings that can exist in the human mind. For a patriot everything about his country is noble. He is proud of her cultural heritage. The manners, customs, and traditions of the country are very dear to him. He is enchanted by her mountains, rivers, and natural features. He takes pride in her economic progress. He is enamored by her art, architecture, literature, and music. For him, there is no country in the world comparable to his Motherland. He wants his country to be always at the top. He is prepared to make any sacrifice for his Motherland. Such is the inspiring force of patriotism that the whole country becomes one during a crisis or a war.
Each country has its share of great patriots. Our country is not lagging behind in this regard. Rani Lakshmi Bai, Subhas Chandra Bose, Mahatma Gandhi, Shivaji, Maharana Pratap Singh, Gopalakrishna Gokhale, Balgangadhar Tilak, Bhagat Singh, Lajpat Rai are a few of them.
However, the word patriotism is misunderstood by many-. It is often equated with fanaticism. Patriotism means loving one’s own country but at the same time not hating other countries or people. You can be a good patriot even while not hating other countries. Patriotism is a positive feeling and does not preach hatred towards others.
