Essay on Rani Lakshmi Bai in English for Students & Children

Rani Lakshmi Bai was born in Varanasi in 1827 and was the daughter of Moropant Tambe. Because girls were married off very young in those times, Lakshmi Bai too was no exception she wed Gangadhar Rao of Jhansi. But unlike her peer; Lakshmi Bai refused to sit back and be confined to domesticity alone. She got permission to learn to ride and fighting with weapons and mastered the art of fighting on horseback. This was quite unheard of in those days, which proves that from the start, Lakshmi Bai was different. Watching her, people began to believe she was the goddess Gang, who had come down to earth in the form of a human being and many worshipped and respected her immensely.

Lakshmi Bai’s achievements were shadowed by great pain, that nine years after her marriage, she was still childless. But royalty demanded an heir, therefore, she adopted a cousin of the king’s son and named him Anand Rao. At that time, India was ruled by the British and Lord Dalhousie headed the government in Calcutta. He refused to recognise Anand Rao as the heir to the throne of Jhansi. In addition, he forbade Lakshmi Bai to rule the kingdom. She, naturally revolted, knowing fully well that the British wanted to claim Jhansi. Without fighting, Lakshmi Bai left Jhansi to live in a palace in the town.

The great Rebellion began in Meerut on May 10, 1857, and about that time the ‘Massacre of Jhansi’ also took place. The Indians killed sixty-six Europeans and Christians, including sixteen women and twenty children. The Rani has been accused of masterminding this incident.

On 25th March, to hit back at Lakshmi Bai, the British decided to seize Jhansi. The Rani asked her childhood friend and brother in name, to help her and they put up great resistance. Unfortunately, one thousand and five hundred men of her army were killed. The Rani fled with two of her faithful bodyguards but was wounded by a bullet fired by a British soldier. Lakshmi breathed her last bravely. Rani Lakshmi Bai made India forever indebted to her bravery and loyalty and will always be remembered among the greatest fighters for her motherland.
