India won its independence on 15 August 1947 from 200 years’ British rule. After independence, India framed her own Constitution which came into force on 26 January 1950. The first General Election of 1951-52 was held under the Indian Constitution.

Indian Constitution is the longest document of its kind in the world. It contains details of the principles, powers, and duties of the Centre and that of the States. The Constitution safeguards the interest of every citizen of India, by giving him many. important rights, such as freedom of speech, thought, expression, belief, faith and worship, equality of status and of opportunities, and also to enjoy the necessary relief and remedy under the law of the land.

Indian Constitution was framed by an Assembly composed by the Central Government with representatives of the people of India. Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first President of the Indian Republic, was the President of the said Assembly, and the first Indian Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was also a member of the same Assembly.

According to the Indian Constitution, India is a `Sovereign Democratic Republic’, in which the President is the Head of the Republic. A democratic state is ruled by the people through their elected representatives. The President is elected for five years by the Members of the Parliament, and the Members of the Legislative Assemblies of the States who are elected by the common people. The Vice-President is elected also in the same process. He merely presides over the Upper House of the Parliament, or the Council of State or Rajya Sabha which consists of indirectly elected and nominated members, while the Lower House or Lok Sabha consists of the Members, elected directly by the people. e elections are held on the basis of the adult franchise which means that a person over 18 years of age is eligible for voting in the election.

The Prime Minister and the Cabinet Ministers are appointed by the President, while the State Governor appoints the Chief Minister and the State Ministers in each of the Indian States. The Constitution provides certain powers to the Centre and the States. The Centre administers the defence, foreign affairs, railways, posts and telegraphs, customs, excise, income tax, etc., while the States look after the peoples’ health, police, jail, education, etc.

India is the largest democracy in the world. The people of India should be aware of their duties and responsibilities towards their country and their fellow citizens, as they enjoy the privileges and rights under the democratic system in the country. They should be loyal and patriots and should sacrifice themselves for the safety and sovereignty of their motherland.
