Gram Panchayat is a mall committee of members elected by the Gram Sabha from its own members.
As the name indicates, the Panchayat should have five members but actually, the number varies from state to state.
After the members of the Gram Panchayat are elected by the Gram Sabha, the members of the former elect from themselves A head who is called the `Sarpanch’. He is also called the Tradhan’. He is the President of the Panchayat.
The Sarpanch calls the meetings of the Panchayat and presides over these meetings.
The Panchayat has some compulsory functions to perform, such as sanitation and public health, construction of roads, planting of trees, making provision for clean drinking water for the villagers, etc.
Among the voluntary functions of the Panchayat, we have management of village dispensary and market, holding of village fairs, supply of good seeds and fertilizers to a farmer, etc.
