Gandhi Jayanti Essay in 200 words

Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of the Father of our nation Mahatma Gandhi. He was born in an affluent family in Rajkot in the year 1869 on 2nd October. His parents were Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai. Mahatma Gandhi’s full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.

Gandhiji was married at the age of 13 to Kasturba Gandhi. He proceeded to England to complete his education in law. Once he visited South Africa for a law case and felt humiliated at the treatment given to Indians. He organised a `Satyagraha’ and won a lot of support.

When he returned to India he plunged into the War—of Independence with the tools of non-violence and satyagraha. He banished foreign goods and clothes and encouraged all to accept khadi. He was a great social reformer. He worked against social evils like untouchability, sati, etc.

It was with his efforts that India gained independence in the year 1947. On 30 January 1948, Nathuram Godse killed him with a bullet shot.

A prayer meeting is organised every year at the Rajghat on this day. A photo exhibition is also organised. Gandhiji’s life inspires us to believe in ‘Simple living high thinking.

October 2nd is a sacred day for the people of India for it was on this day in 1869 a great man who shaped the destiny of our country was born. The day is celebrated throughout the country as a mark of respect for Mahatma Gandhi, ‘The father of the nation’.

This year too we celebrated Gandhi Jayanti in our school on October 2nd. By 8:00 a.m We assembled at the school playground. The National Flag was hoisted by the Director of Public Instruction, who was the chief guest. Then he garlanded the photograph of Gandhiji with reverence. The chief guest then addressed the audience. He urged the students to follow in the footprints of this great man. He quoted several incidents in Gandhiji’s life to show his upright character. He said Gandhiji led a simple life. His simplicity led him to greatness. He was a true patriot. He made great sacrifices for our country. He devised simple methods of truth and non-violence to fight the British. Though he was imprisoned several times it did not deter him in his fight against the British. He lived for the lowly and the poor. It was his sincerity, simplicity, and commitment that made him a great man.

The speech was followed by a short drama highlighting the various incidents during India’s struggle for independence. Then the students took a vow to follow truth and non-violence under any circumstance.

The celebration came to an end with a vote of thanks conveyed by our school teacher. The National Anthem was sung at the end.
