A festival in India is a time of fasting, prayers, feasts, rejoicing, and family reunion. It is also an occasion of exchange of sweets, gifts, and greetings. Durga puja is one of these festivals. It comes in Sept—October in the month of Aswin.

It is celebrated all over the country. But it is most popular in West Bengal and Orissa. Houses and shops are well cleaned and decorated. New clothes, shoes, and other articles are bought. Many kinds of sweets are prepared and pujas are held.

Grand and well-ornamented images of Durga are worshipped. The fascinating images inspire awe and respect. She is there in her full majesty. The demon Mahisasura lies defeated at her feet. She rides a fierce lion. Devotees worship her amidst singing of bhajans, beating of drums, and blowing of conches. Finally, her images are immersed in rivers, ponds, etc.

When images are brought to the puja pandal, the festival begins. We all seek her blessings which alone can help us triumph over the evil. On the fourth day, the images are immersed in the river or in the ponds. During Durga Puja, we have our autumn vacation. The schools, colleges, and offices are closed and many families go to different places of interest to spend their holidays. All those living away from home come back to be with their families, friends, and relatives. This great community festival makes people forget differences and the Hindus, the Muslims and the Christians happily united on this occasion.
