India is the land of festivals. Diwali falls in the month of November. It comes twenty days after the Dussehra festival. Ram had returned to Ayodhya on this day after victory over Ravana. The people lit earthen lamps to honour and welcome him.
Diwali is the festival of lights. The people whitewash their houses and shops. The children buy toys and crackers. The people buy new utensils, clothes. Candles are sold in large numbers. The people worship Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. They send Diwali greetings to their friends and relatives.

Diwali, the festival of lights, is one of the most beautiful festivals in India. Apart from its religious significance, Diwali lights up, not only homes, but hearts as well because this is a time that the near and dear ones exchange sweets, gifts, and love!
The Hindus believe that on this day Rama returned to Ayodhya after fourteen years in exile. He returned after destroying Ravana, the evil king of demons who had kept Sita, Rama’s wife, captive.
Diwali is celebrated in the months of October—November and it opens doors for winter who waits impatiently to approach. The excitement of Diwali is coupled with the respite winter gives after the long, endless burning summer. Preparations begin well in advance with the whitewashing of the house, cleaning, and scrubbing of floors. Innumerable gifts are brought. The sweets and dry fruit shops are crowded with people dressed in their best. Crackers are bought by excited children, and nervous parents because ‘crackers’ mean `danger’ and ‘explosions’ therefore there needs to be a constant vigil on each child!

It is said that Lord Rama came back to Ayodhya after an exile of fourteen years. During his exile, his wife Sita was abducted by Ravan, the demon. Sri Ram killed Ravan, Kumbhkaran, and Meghnad. When he came back to Ayodhya, people lit earthen lamps to welcome him. From that day every year lamps are lit. This festival reminds us of the victory of good over evil.
People start preparing for Deepawali much before it comes. They clean their houses and working places. They whitewash them. They start distributing gifts among their friends and relatives. Houses, shops, and markets are decorated tastefully. People do a lot of shopping. They buy new clothes and sweets. Children buy crackers.
On the day of Diwali, people exchange greetings with one another. They decorate their houses with candles and lights. In the evening the whole city looks like a bride, beautifully dressed in light. Diwali is the happiest festival of Hindus. It is widely celebrated with great show and pomp, happiness, and splendor throughout India. It comes off towards the close of the dark period of Ashwin which falls in October or November.
Diwali is also called Deepawali, a row or line of lamps. Long before its arrival, people start cleaning, whitewashing, and decorating their houses. Bazaars go gay with festoons, buntings, paper lanterns, and floral ornamentations. They display a wide variety of goods in a great many attractive and artistic ways. People make various kinds of Diwali purchases. Shops do brisk business.
Diwali lasts for five days. Each one of these days has a religious significance. The first day is called ‘Dhan Terash’ when people worship the goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. The next day, the slaying of the evil demon Narakasura by Lord Krishna is celebrated. The third day is Diwali Day. It is the closing day of the business year of the Hindus. They close their old account books and ceremoniously open new ones. This ceremony is called ‘Chopda Poojan’, the worship of account books.
Then comes the crowning glory of it all, Diwali Day. People get ready very early in the morning dressed in their best First, they bow to their elders in the family and seek their blessings. Then they visit temples and other places of worship. They visit the houses of their relatives, friends, and acquaintances to wish them a Happy Diwali.
After Diwali, postmen, office peons, and domestic servants turn out for Diwali baksheesh’. Gladness and goodwill flood the world. On the last day of the festival called ‘Bhai Duj, the brother shows his love and affection for his sister, visits her house for a feast, seeks her good wishes, and gives her a present.
All these five days are days of happiness and merry-making. People rise before day-break, children let off crackers, adults often joining them in the fireworks, women decorate house entrances with lovely ‘rangolis’ and make sweets. At night they light earthen lamps outside their houses in long rows which adds glory and splendor to them.
Diwali is, indeed, the most glamorous and enjoyable festival of the Hindus. It is to the Hindus what Xmas is to the Christians, the merriest festival of the year.
