The word ‘culture’ is generally used in the sense of good taste and refined manners. Culture is a sense of ultimate values possessed by a particular person or society. The definition of culture, however, varies from person to person, and from country to country, depending on the tradition, religion, and social background of each one.

Before the dawn of civilization, religion and culture fell on the tribal groups of men during the pre-historic era, when men were satisfied with their peaceful life of tranquility and innocence. But man is self-reflective, irrespective of the fact whether he is primitive or modern. As he belongs to the society, his self-reflection is influenced by the culture, language, and history of his society. Man changes only when his society changes. At the social level of his life, man enjoys and suffers in a significant surrounding whiCh has its own art, myth, language, etc. what is known as ‘culture’.

Mathew Arnold says, “Culture is to know the best that has been said and thought in the world.”

Culture is a refined taste that is inherent in a person. It may influence its surrounding conditions. Culture aims at accepting a complete man with his integrated personality, by filling all of his shortcomings and improving upon his mental understanding. Culture is the medium of one’s way of life. In the case of groups of human beings, it is transmitted from one generation to another. people having their own long history build up their own pattern of cultures.

Culture does not depend on one’s literary background or knowledge in any particular phase in life. It has something to do with one’s general behaviour, speech, conduct, discipline, compassion, and generosity. Culture is not visible in one’s handsome appearance or clean dress. It remains within one’s heart and is expressed through one’s five senses. It depends on one’s training, education, and above all, a civilization that comes out of one’s senses when they are under his full control.

The culture of a group or a nation comes from its base of internal administration and the balanced judgment of things that are not ‘common to the other groups or nations. It is only the failures and the achievements that, when scrutinized in detail, will reveal their lack of culture if Any. The culture of a particular nation generally takes the shape from its religion, philosophy and history, and physical world.

Culture is the result of self-control. When a cultured man speaks, his sweet words deliver the truth soaked in affection. That is culture. When a cultured man offers a gift to anyone with kindly words uttered with humility, then the heart of the receiver appreciates the sweet behaviour of the giver more than the worth of the gift itself. That is culture. A society or a nation must possess culture to become recognised as civilized.
