Shaheed Bhagat Singh is remembered as Shaheed-e-Azam. His slogan of ‘Inquilab Zindabad’, made a great impact on the youth during the freedom movement. He was born in a Sikh Jat family. He studied in D.A.V. College, Lahore where Lala Lajpat Rai was a teacher. When he was in class 9, he joined the Non-Cooperation Movement. To avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, he killed Saunders on 17 December 1928. He was an active member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army. In 1925, he initiated the militant youth organisation called the Naujawan Bharat Sabha. Bhagat Singh exploded bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly, Delhi in 1929. He was hanged with his two comrades 012 23 March 1931.

Bhagat Singh became famous as Shaheed-e-Azam. The hanging of Bhagat Singh made a strong impact on the youth of India during the freedom struggle. His slogan of Inquilab Zindabad’ highly influenced the younger generation and more youth joined the freedom struggle.
Bhagat Singh was born on 28 September 1907 at Banga village of Lyallpur district in West Punjab (now in Pakistan). His father and uncles had participated in the freedom movement. So, Bhagat Singh was influenced by their patriotic activities.
At school, Bhagat Singh was a very good and disciplined student. When he was studying in class 9, he joined the Non-Cooperation Movement. Then he studied at D.A.V. College, Lahore. Lala Lajpat Rai and Bhai Parmanand taught in that college. They influenced young Bhagat deeply. There he organised a students’ union. In 1923, he joined the Secret Revolutionary Party. Later, this came to be known as the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). He became its leading figure. In 1925, he initiated the militant youth organisation, the Naujawan Bharat Sabha of Punjab.
After completing the Intermediate examination, he was forced to marry. But, Bhagat Singh ran away from home and came to Kanpur. He found employment in the newspapers Pratap and Arjun. He also worked as the editorial staff of a socialist journal called Kirti. He wrote in these newspapers under a pseudonym.
Bhagat Singh was much more an activist than just an intellectual. In 1926, he got involved in the abortive2 plan of Azad and Kundanlal. This was to rescue the prisoners of the Kakori case. Again, Bhagat Singh along with his revolutionary friends, Sukhdev and Rajguru killed Saunders (who was responsible for the police attack on Lala Lajpat Rai) on 17 December 1928. During the anti-Simon Commission agitation at Lahore, Lala Lajpat Rai was seriously injured by a police attack which caused his death. Therefore, the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) took revenge for his death.
Bhagat Singh was a very powerful speaker. His ironic speeches were very encouraging. When the Public Safety Bill was introduced in the Delhi Assembly on 8 April 1929, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutta exploded bombs in the Central Assembly. They were arrested and sentenced to transportation for life.
Bhagat Singh with his associates went on a hunger strike in Borstar Jail, Lahore. They demanded better conditions in prison. Bhagat Singh’s fasting continued for 115 days. But his associate Yatindra Das passed away on the 63rd day. Then a large-scale agitation forced the Jail authority to fulfill their demands.
In July 1929, the Lahore Conspiracy Case began. In this case, Bhagat Singh was accused. He was sentenced to death. On 23 March 1931 Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were hanged. They happily kissed the noose; chanting Inquilab Zindabad’. Bhagat Singh died with his comrades on the gallows’. His death made him a legend.
Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s activities as a youth revolutionary made him very popular. His passionate statements from the dock, his contempt for British justice, his slogan of `Inquilab Zindabad’ swayed his countrymen and mesmerised the youth. The entire nation recalls his sacrifice with deep gratitude even today. His martyrdom was symbolic of the spirit of revolutionary young India.
