Diwali is one of the most important festivals in India. It is a festival of lights and joy. It marks the victory of good over evil. Rama defeated Ravana, the evil king of Lanka. Rama returned to Ayodhya and became a great and ideal king. Houses, shops, etc. are whitewashed newly painted and decorated for the festival. People wear the best colourful clothes. They exchange sweets and greetings and give gifts to one another. There are electric, candle, and mud lamps in rows and rows. At night there are fireworks and Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped. People spend freely in the festive mood. They buy new clothes, jewelry, sweets, utensils, etc.
