Essay on My Favourite Leader Lal Bahadur Shastri

My favourite leader is Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri. He was the second Prime Minister of India.

Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri became the Prime Minister, after Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964. Before Pt. Nehru’s death, the burning question was “After Nehru, who?” It was being felt that after Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, perhaps there was no leader worthy enough to step into his shoes. Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri proved the doubt false and baseless. He showed his mettle and caliber within a short period of just eighteen months.

He was born on 2nd October 1904 at Mughal Sarai in Uttar Pradesh. He took an active part in the freedom struggle of India and went to jail several times. He belonged to a poor family and it is said that he had to swim across a stream daily to reach his school.

After Independence, he took an active part in politics. He rose to be the Railway Minister in Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet. He was a man of integrity and when a serious railway accident occurred, he resigned taking the moral responsibility on himself.

During the Indo-Pak War in 1965, the country emerged triumphant under his brave and able leadership. In fact, under his stewardship, India inflicted a crushing defeat on Pakistan. However, unfortunately, Shastriji himself died of cardiac arrest on 11th January 1966 when he was at Tashkent in Russia where negotiations for peace between India and Pakistan were being held under the supervision of Russia.

Shastriji will always be remembered for doing India proud and making her great and for his slogan: “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan”.
