Assigning homework is an old practice. Nevertheless, it still manages to instill stress in children today. In recent times, it has been debated many times whether homework should be given to children or not. In this essay, I will elucidate why doing homework is important for kids.
Critics argue that homework puts unnecessary pressure on children. Children have to compensate for the homework by cutting back on extra curricular activities. It is important for kids to freshen their minds and bodies. Most importantly, many times children end up copying their homework if it is given in bulk. Also, most of the work given is considered to be unnecessary writing work by the parents. According to parents, taking time out from their busy schedules to help their kids with homework is difficult too.
Supporters of homework argue that homework encourages students to practice the lessons taught at schools once again at home. In order that they don’t forget what they’ve been taught at schools, it is important for them to repeat it at home as well. Homework also makes a child think more than what he has already grasped in the classroom. Most importantly, parents get involved in their children’s education when they help them with homework. This increases the commitment of a parent towards their child’s education and participates in his life.
In conclusion, though assigning homework is important, teachers should also make sure to not let it become a burden to students. The point behind assigning work is to make students understand concepts better, not scare them away from studying. Hence, with proper consideration, homework has many advantages than disadvantages
