Holidays are the way of the calendar signaling everyone to relax. Come holidays, the whole household is relaxing, except the mother at home. But for her, the entire family is looking forward to any form of holiday weekly, festival, term leave, and annual. Even Mother’s day becomes a holiday for the rest of the family and not for her. While children plan to play and spend their whole day out of home, elders at home relax by watching television, cooking up delicacies, going shopping, or even planning the next holiday. With a string of holidays coming up during festivals, some pick up an extra day’s leave from their workplace and get out of town for the much-needed break. Many go out visiting friends, exchanging pleasantries, and dining out. For employed women, it is time to spruce up their home, catch up with the gossip mill and relax with their families. Overall holidays are a breather to sprinting to everyday life.

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”, is an old saying full of meaning. Change is charming, it cheers the gloomy life. Without variety life becomes monotonous. Davies has rightly said, “What is this life if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare”. The holiday is a play day for the children, a gay day for the servants, a happy day for the idle, and a holy day for all. The word itself carries a grand meaning. Holiday – a holy day, a festive day. Holidays at proper intervals are necessary, especially for young people and for those engaged in hard mental work, for continuous work, without a break will injure the health. A short holiday, if rightly used, will send us back to our work with renewed zest and vigour.
Advantages of holidays depend upon, to use an often-quoted phrase, “if rightly used”. For it is not enough if we get holidays, we should know how to use them properly. Quite often we find holidays are misused and sometimes abused. If the holidays are spent in stupid idleness or in an exhausting round of exciting amusements or shut up in closed stuffy rooms drinking and playing, holidays may not serve their purpose. Instead of doing any good, the holidays may do more harm than ‘steady work would ever do.
Holidays if used rightly will enable us to renew our energies and interest in our work. We should get away to the pure air of the country and live a healthy open-air life, enjoying games or sports. This besides providing us with the much-needed change will enable us to further our knowledge by observation. We should avoid unhealthy amusements, keep early hours and get plenty of refreshing sleep. And we should not be completely idle. Change of occupation is by itself a rest. And if we have a little regular work to do, work that we take an interest in, it will make our holiday not only healthier but also more enjoyable.
