Essay on Generation Gap For Students and Children
It has been observed in recent years that the difference in attitude and behaviour between elders and younger people in a family has increased. This is termed a generation gap. The generation gap has given rise to serious social problems.
The elders complain of lack of respect, casual attitude, and indiscipline among the youngsters. The younger people charge elders with dictatorial attitudes, hypocrisy, and outdated thinking. They view each other with suspicion and any casual remark is seen as a challenge to their self-respect and individuality.
Why does this generation gap occur? Weren’t all the elders, youngsters once? Will not all youngsters become elders in the future? This is true but the perspectives of older and younger generations clash, irrespective of this truth. Elders would have imbibed the values, behaviour, and attitude of their times and insisted that the children follow the same. They would like the children to benefit from their experience. They are shocked to see children making fun of their values and questioning their traditions and customs.
The younger generation also contributes to the confusion. They question their elders and feel nothing wrong in arguing with or correcting their elders. They want to be left alone to lead life the way they want without elders constantly breathing down their necks.
The generation gap can be bridged by elders and youngsters assuming the role of friends and not of rulers and the ruled. The older generation can enrich their lives by new thinking and adjusting them to the new situations, while the younger generation can make their life meaningful by benefiting from the experience of the elders. Then the gap will disappear and will be replaced by harmony.
