Many people think that if they have a lot of money and wherewithal for luxuries, they can be happy. They never realize that happiness is the attitude of the mind.
An international survey has revealed that the richest and the poorest have almost equal occasions for happiness and in most of the cases both get the same amount of happiness, though their means of attaining happiness are different.
A poor man can be happy if he gets just two square meals. A rich man will be happy only if he earns a huge profit in an enter-price. A small profit will upset him. A child who wins just one marble in a game may be as happy as a king when he conquers a vast land. Alexander is said to have got despondent when he learned that there were no more lands which he could conquer.
In spite of all this, it cannot be denied that the bare necessities of life are essential to make us happy. How can we say that a man tormented with hunger and having not a paisa in his pocket to buy a simple bun is very happy whatever his attitude to life? Is a man groaning with pain and with no money in his pocket to buy a pain-killing pill a happy man?
Surprisingly, if you ask the spiritualists, they can convince you that even such a man can be happy. Contrarily, a man wallowing in plush and silk and having nothing to do maybe unhappy. Such a man may be suffering from boredom, ennui and loneliness, and even consequential depression and the blues of being too rich.
Thus, a busy, hardworking man is a happy man. A man who has some good jolly friends is too one of the happiest men on earth.
To be happy, we trust to have the spirit to make others happy. We must spread cheerfulness to be ourselves cheerful.
