It is no secret that with the advancement in technology and crime rate throughout the world, there have been stringent steps that have been taken to fight the statistics. With the advent of video and CCTV cameras, the police authorities learned to utilize these cameras in the best way possible to be their eyes and ears when they weren’t around.

Every story like a coin has two sides. In my opinion, having video cameras in public indeed go a long way to eliminating crimes and offences committed in countries across the world on a daily basis. They catch all criminals red-handed in the act of committing an offence so that they can be caught before it is too late and penalized for their wrongful acts.

On the other hand, it is also true that having video cameras in public places enormously restricts the individual freedom of people by prying into their personal lives. Although we “legally” have the right to freedom, it is not absolutely true when we come to think of it. Having cameras in public places like restaurants, schools, elevators, etc. can be a massive annoyance to some people because they value their privacy and would like to reserve the exposition of it by choice and not by an obligation.

The Delhi Police Authorities recently announced that having CCTV cameras in public places definitely puts weight on avoiding criminal acts from happening because even if the cameras are not in perfect working condition or of low-quality, seeing them installed is enough for the felons to think twice before doing something illegal.

If we put the two arguments together, the pros of installing video cameras or CCTV surveillance in public places certainly outweigh its cons or drawbacks. It should become a mandatory norm in countries all around the world to fight crime hands on!
