Communication forms the backbone of our society. The ways we communicate with the people around us has changed dramatically in the recent years. This is owed largely in part to technology and its impressive advancements in a short span of time. While people in the 80s considered landline telephones a game changer, technology has advanced much further today. First came the internet which made everything possible, opening new areas of communication throughout the world. Smartphones were invented, followed by online networking sites and popular free voice and video calling apps. However, every development comes with its own baggage replete with pros and cons.
Social networking and easy-to-use calling apps have reduced the need for physically traveling miles upon miles to meet a relative or a friend. Instead of having to call your numerous friends and family for updates on their lives, you can simply see their updates on popular social networking sites such as Instagram or Facebook. You can now make free calls to anyone present anywhere in the world at the simple press of a button on an app on your handy smartphone. You can even talk real time with your friends or family via video chat. The possibilities are indeed endless. At the same time, with such easy-to-access avenues of communication on hand, the close personal relationships that existed between people a few years ago has disappeared. While people maintain their moral boundaries in society, online, everyone is free to express and bully strangers whose views they don’t agree with. As a result, cyber bullying has increased drastically.
With everyone having access to a smartphone or tablet today, personal communication is dwindling. It is not uncommon to see a group of friends having lunch together at a restaurant but all more interested in taking the perfect Insta-worthy picture for their online handle instead of actually enjoying the food and catching up with their friends.
Personal communication and developing relationships with people is often overlooked. Regardless of technology enabling us to stay in touch with people all over the world, it is pertinent that we do not shun the importance of face-to-face communication. Doing so, we can ensure that we do not become estranged from the people who are near and dear to us.
