The only effective way to deal with unemployment is to introduce rapid urbanization

Academic Essay for PTE & IELTS- The only effective way to deal with unemployment is to introduce rapid urbanization. How far you agree?

The 21st century is the age of urbanization that has led to major advances in economic growth, development and raising the standard of living of people employed in specific sectors. However, regardless of the way the economy has progressed, the number of people who are unemployed is staggering. Although many people believe that rapid urbanization is the only way to curb employment, I believe otherwise.

When it comes to developing nations, a major part of the population is involved primarily in agriculture and its allied services such as fishing, poultry etc. If rapid urbanization is introduced, these people would be forced to leave their roots behind and move to cities in search of jobs. Cities already have a dearth of jobs that require skilled labor and this rapid shift of population with further aggravate the same. The agricultural sector will face a major setback as people would set out in search of ways to improve their standard of living. Our forefathers back in the days came from rural areas. Although they had access to lesser means and commodities, never were they unemployed since they were always involved in managing something in their native villages and towns as a form of self-employment. There is always something to be done at the grassroots.

Rapid urbanization would bring with it the survival of the fittest scenario, wherein people will have to outshine their family, friend or foe in order to get a job. Not only will this jeopardize relationships, but will also exaggerate unemployment. Thus, you are left with a massive influx of people from the rural areas in search of jobs in a profession that they are not familiar with and their primary profession and backbone of the country suffer at the same time.

For example, in India itself, with urbanization and dreams of a better life, many adolescents move into cities, leaving behind all that they know. When they are in cities, they aren’t able to find waged jobs and either resort to freelancing on small gigs off and on or petty crimes.

I reiterate my opinion that rapid urbanization alone cannot be the solution to unemployment. There is already a massive need of people in the rural sector. Employing people in the latter will be able to combat unemployment to a great extent.
