How do you think the crime would reduce – with harsher punishments or moral teachings? Discuss both the views and take a stand?
Punishment should always be given to the person who has committed the crime to teach him/her the lesson for the wrong deeds. However, whether the punishment should be harsher or with the help of moral teaching, that is always a debatable question at social, ethical, legal and religious terms.
Harsh punishment can certainly bring down the ratio of the crime due to fear of severe punishments. Also, it looks mandatory in case of severe crimes such as murder, rape or kidnapping. In some cases, heavy fines or imprisonment or death sentences against such crimes are being imposed. The rationale for it is that the people think twice before committing such crimes because there are few people, who tend to take the decision of committing the crime based on the punishment associated with it.
As far as moral teaching is concerned, the same show the positive effects in the longer run. Moral education should be incorporated as a part of the education system that teaches the student from the young age, such as how should the person distinguish between right and wrong. The parents should take the active participation in teaching moral values such as honesty is the best policy. These values play an important role when it comes to making a child a responsible person.
To conclude, according to me, the criminal punishment should be taken care with the balanced approach. The criminal should be punished according to the degree, nature & pertained situation of the crime. The justice should be declared by checking the validity of the evidence. The jurisdiction system should ensure to give justice on time so that the people have faith in the law & order.
